The Christian life can be full of twists and turns, ups and downs, but should never be boring. As we journey with The Lord, he teaches us to trust him in every eventuality and makes known, his plans and purposes for us. More thrilling however, he continues to teach us about himself. A number of years ago I started to see more clearly than ever before that God’s purpose was that I would find joy in him. Now there are those who sadly wouldn’t associate joy with Christianity. Yet, the truth is that the Bible does. Time and again we are encouraged to delight in, to take pleasure in, to be satisfied with and be overflowing with joy. Why? Because we find joy, peace and hope in the God who has saved us.
David, the Psalmist evidently experienced the presence and power of God in a most profound way. In Psalm 27 verse 4 he writes; The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. I suspect that in these few words, David shares with us the secret of his joy. Why? Because his delight evidently did not come from his position, his wealth or his relationships. Rather, his joy and satisfaction were a result of meditating upon The Lord’s perfections.
This week, whatever situation you are in and whatever struggle you face, I encourage you to look up and to take joy in Jesus!
Yours and His, Gareth
