There is a staggering verse in Galatians Chapter 4 which should both thrill and amaze us. The Apostle Paul says; ‘And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying Abba! Father’ (Vs 6). Isn’t that wonderful? Not only has God has adopted us, but whether we are men or women, has given us the full rights of sons, who in the ancient world were the only ones who would receive the full rights of inheritance. Paul continues in order to tell us what that inheritance is. Rather than simply giving us a promise or an impartation of power, God imparts to us a greater blessing. God gives to us nothing less than his very self.
Now just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it does. The reason that God grants his Spirit is not simply to impart power or to bring us further conviction of sin. Rather, here we learn that one of the roles of the ‘Spirit of his Son’ is to bring us into such a deep and intimate relationship with God that we may know him and cry to him as Abba! Father.
This week, let us live our lives in light of these wonderful truths. Let us not live as slaves of God, but according to the very next verse as both son’s and as heirs.
