On Monday, I chaired a meeting at which the Life in the Spirit Team considered what subject to tackle at our conference in 2016. Although there are numerous subjects we would love to address, we unanimously agreed on ‘Not Ashamed’. In his letter to the Romans the Apostle Paul says he is ‘not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God, unto salvation’ (Ro 1:16). However, I wondered if you have ever considered, exactly what that Gospel is? In an age, where the Good News of Jesus is being marginalised (from both inside and outside the church), it is important that we know and can clearly articulate the essential truths of our faith.
In the last two months I have been set the same challenge on two occasions. That is to define the Gospel. The first challenger asked me to do it in a paragraph, the second in seven words. Believe me; it is much tougher than it sounds! I encourage you to give it a go. See if you can write down the Good News of Jesus in sixty words or less in order that as we come to Christmas you would be ‘prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have’ (1 Pe 3:15).
I would love to see your scribbling’s and would be happy to share with you mine. For the record I think I have just cracked it with fifty-nine words!
Yours in eager anticipation, Gareth
