It always strikes me as somewhat odd that at the start of the New Year, Christians up and down the year focus upon their New Year resolutions. Two thousand years ago Paul wrote to his friends in Galatia and asked them a simple but profound question. Had they, ‘received the Spirit by observing the Law, or by believing what they heard?’ (Gal 3:2). Like us the Galatians had been set free, through the good news of Jesus, from the Law of God. Yet, instead of living according to God’s grace, they had simply started to replace one set of rules with another!
Should we therefore live in 2015 as we did in 2014? Absolutely not! We should grow in our understanding and develop in our relationship with God. Therefore, at the start of this New Year if you sense that God is calling you to drop a few pounds on the scales, save a few quid in the bank, quit smoking or spend more time with your children; don’t simply revert to relying on your own limited resources. Don’t act like those outside of Christ, who make simple resolutions, but trust God for a spiritual revolution! I encourage you then, draw strength from the Spirt of God, because as the Scriptures says elsewhere you can do ‘all things through Christ who gives me strength (Phil 4:13).
Every blessing, Gareth
