Amidst the political jostling of the General Election campaign, one news item seemed to grab the attention of the world’s media this week. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Indonesia executed eight prisoners convicted of drug smuggling. Pastors who spent time with the condemned up until they faced the firing squad reported; not only did the men refuse blindfolds, but stood singing ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Bless the Lord O My Soul’. Whatever you believe to be the rights or wrongs of capital punishment, the men appear guilty of bringing appalling suffering through their terrible trade. In light of this many may wonder ‘how could it be possible for them to ever know God’s ‘Amazing Grace’?
Now just think about this for a moment. The answer is in the question!
If we received from God that which we deserved, we would not receive grace, but justice. However whenever we receive that which we do not deserve, we receive and are subsequently able to rejoice in God’s Amazing, underserved, unmerited, unconditional, extravagant, overwhelming, staggering and stupendous Grace!
Therefore with this in mind, I do encourage you to pray this week for our nation. Pray that ‘he would not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.’ Why? Because as ‘high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.’ (Psalm 103:10-11)
