I have been struck this week by the number of people who have said to me “at least it’s a bank holiday coming up”. I don’t suspect that many are holding out much hope for blazing sunshine, nor for a day by the seaside. So what then is the attraction? It seems to be simply, that many are simply in need of a break!
Throughout the Old Testament we find that God’s people have a pattern, not only of fasting, but of feasting. And, when the nation feasted, they really did feast! These long anticipated festivals were times to meet with extended family and friends and to remember God’s goodness. They were more however times of commemoration. They were times of both celebration and indeed communion with God.
It is tragic that modern society has robbed many of us of this opportunity. However, none can rob us of the amazing invitation of the Lord Jesus Christ who says; invitation ‘’Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matt 11:28-30)
Enjoy the break, but do take hold of the promise!
Every blessing, Gareth
