Last Thursday morning, all across the country, the countdown to Christmas officially began. Excited children (and many more chocolate loving adults) had the delight of opening of the first door of the advent calendar. For many of us this simple act triggered something of a panic. The realisation dawned that there is still much to do and a diminishing time-frame in which to do it!
As I reflect on the Christmas story through the season of advent, I am very mindful that God is not in the same rush as me. Indeed, even from the very beginning the Scriptures start to reveal God’s s promise of a Saviour. Like the opening of an advent calendar, God’s truth unfolds stage-by stage, until the fullness of His plan is made known.
At the beginning of his Gospel, John, ‘the disciple that Jesus loved’ records: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14). Wow isn’t that glorious? After centuries of waiting God’s promise is surprisingly, perfectly and most-wonderfully made known, through the giving of His one and only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
What a joy and privilege we have therefore, that we like John can delight again in HIS GLORY!
Yours rejoicing, Gareth
