I recently stumbled across and incredible prayer on You Tube. Although I am familiar with it, as well as the story behind it, it again thrilled my spirit. I am therefore sharing it for your encouragement.
S. M. Lockridge (1913- 2000) was the Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, a prominent African American congregation located in San Diego, California. He was active in the civil rights movement, serving alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and later became involved in the Billy Graham Association.
On one occasion Dr Lockridge was asked to pray at the beginning of a conference. The prayer, which lasted around three and a half minutes, started slowly and built to a great crescendo. The whole purpose of the prayer appears to be to honour and glorify Jesus and includes a repeated refrain. ‘Do you know him?’ In order to whet your appetite, here is an excerpt:
He’s enduringly strong. He’s entirely sincere. He’s eternally steadfast. He’s immortally graceful. He’s imperially powerful. He’s impartially merciful. That’s my King. He’s God’s Son. He’s the sinner’s Saviour. He’s the centerpiece of civilization. He stands alone in Himself. He’s honest. He’s unique. He’s unparalleled. He’s unprecedented. He’s supreme. He’s pre-eminent. He’s the grandest idea in literature. He’s the highest personality in philosophy. He’s the supreme problem in higher criticism. He’s the fundamental doctrine of historic theology. He’s the carnal necessity of spiritual religion. That’s my King.
So the question I want to ask is….do you know him? If so, I encourage you to give him the praise he deserves.
