Anyone who knows me, knows I love baptisms. Although it is encouraging to have had so many this year, it would still be great to have many more. Why? Because someone being baptised is so much more than a public soaking. Baptism is an act of obedience that echoes in eternity.
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus makes this astounding statement; ‘Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven’ (10:32). Now I am sure that there have been many highlights in Debbie’s life. Yet, today will undoubtedly be very special. Surrounded by her family and friends, Debbie will take the opportunity to share how God has transformed her life through his love and grace. However, as Christians we have the thrilling prospect that the best day is still to come.
According to these words of Jesus that we have just read, the time will come when he will finally and eternally welcome us home. Now, it is important to recognise that baptism itself does not secure our salvation. Rather, baptism is a public acknowledgement and celebration of God’s saving power.
I encourage you then, not only to celebrate with Debbie, but to tale every opportunity to acknowledge/ testify/ share/ shout about/ demonstrate and proclaim…..the good news about Jesus. Why? Because there is a great day coming.
Yours and His, Gareth
